Background
Although mining in the UK has declined dramatically over the past thirty years, it would be a mistake to say that there are no more coal mines!
A case in point is Energybuild’s Aberpergwm Mine in Neath, South Wales, where specialist carbon products are mined and prepared for industry. Filtration, batteries, lead recycling, stainless steel manufacture and brick colourants are some of the applications. Aberpergwm Mine is now the only source of high-grade anthracite in Western Europe, with an expected life of over 50 years.
It has used B&F hazardous-area equipment since the 1970s, continuing the tradition now with TCS load centres, BFS Mk3 gate end boxes (flameproof motor starters), Stardrive 1100V variable-speed drives (VSD) and Delphi Ex control systems. The mine has also recently taken delivery of a new 3300V high-power VSD, the Elite 2MW unit, as a standby power source for underground ventilation fans.
The Elite is tailored to act as an instant drop-in replacement for the duty VSD, with a changeover time measured in minutes if necessary. B&F also repair and upgrade Aberpergwm’s electrical equipment to the latest standards and specifications.
