local isolation unit

An electrical local isolation unit (LIU) is a switch or device that can be located close to an appliance or motor. Used to isolate specific electrical circuits from the mains power supply, it creates a safe disconnect point near the appliance itself, independent of the main circuit breaker. And, unlike operation of main circuit breakers, local isolation units do not require specialist personnel.

There are many suppliers for low-voltage local isolation units, but far fewer that offer proven and ruggedised technology for medium-voltage applications.

Electrical Isolation is a safety-critical process, which must take place before any operator intervention takes place.

In many cases, the isolation of medium-voltage (MV) switchgear often requires a Senior Approved Person (SAP) and the issuing of permits. This is often a rigorous and time-consuming process, and SAPs are not always immediately available, which could lead to extended periods of downtime. Furthermore, regular operation of MV switchgear can lead to premature wear and performance/safety degradation.

Revolutionize Downtime Reduction and Safety with Medium-Voltage Local Isolation Units from iDESo Group

The iDESo Group can supply a variety of MV units – rated for 3.3, 6.6 or 11 KV – with features and capabilities that can be tailored to specific application demands, including harsh operating environments. All the devices utilise a fault make-load break switch with early break auxiliary contacts for tripping upstream, such that the actual units are operated off-load.

A recent application includes the manufacture and installation of a number 3.3 KV local isolation units in an aggregate industry application, to provide isolation and load-side earthing capabilities adjacent to MV Motors.

Options available include:

  • Painted mild steel (any RAL or BS paint finish available) or Grade 316 Stainless.
  • With or without a mechanically interlocked earth switch
  • Interlocked live-side earth switch in addition to load-side earth switch.
  • High-Ingress Protection – up to IP65
  • Viewing windows to view switch status.
  • Cable couplers.
  • Skid mounting for use in quarries and similar
  • Full interlocking, using Castell or Fortress locks
  • Padlocking facilities (as required) for both main switch on/off, earth off & earth-applied
  • Cable-entry flexibility – top or bottom cable entry plus side or rear gland boxes.
